Watch For
Common Zone 4a problems.
Snow mold (gray + pink)
Final mow to 2.5 inches. Skip late-October N. Spring rake breaks up matted areas.
Vole damage under snowpack
Reseed runs in spring. KBG self-repairs within a season via rhizomes.
Leaf spot (melting out) in spring
Modern KBG cultivars are mostly resistant. Avoid mowing too short and over-fertilizing in early spring.
Summer patch (Magnaporthiopsis poae)
Affects KBG monocultures on heavy soils. Mix in fine fescue and TTTF; manage thatch; avoid drought stress.
Crabgrass pressure
Pre-emergent at soil temp 55°F (typically mid-May). Forsythia bloom = indicator.
