Best Grasses
What grows in Zone 5b.
Kentucky Bluegrass
KBG
Still the showcase turf. Choose elite NTEP cultivars rated for heat tolerance (Bewitched, Award, Midnight) to push through July.
Best for: Primary full-sun turf
Turf-Type Tall Fescue
TTTF
Increasingly the smarter long-term call here. Heat tolerance lets it carry July–August without going dormant. Modern brown-patch-resistant cultivars (Rebel IV, Cochise IV, Falcon V) are the top tier.
Best for: Full-sun heat-prone, clay, low-input
KBG/TTTF Blend (60/40 or 70/30)
Blend
The classic Zone 5b blend. KBG fills via rhizomes; TTTF carries summer heat.
Best for: Best-of-both-worlds full sun
Fine Fescue Blend
Fine Fescue
Premier shade option for tree-canopy lawns.
Best for: Shade, dry shade, low-input
Hybrid Bluegrass
HBG
Heat-tolerant KBG alternative. Useful where pure KBG struggles in heat-island sites.
Best for: Heat-stress full sun

Watch For
Common Zone 5b problems.
Summer patch on KBG monocultures
Mix in TTTF or fine fescue; manage thatch <0.5"; avoid drought stress.
Brown patch on TTTF (Rhizoctonia)
Water early morning; avoid evening watering. Reduce summer N. Modern resistant cultivars help.
Crabgrass + nutsedge pressure
Pre-emergent at soil temp 55°F (late April). Spot-treat nutsedge with halosulfuron in summer.
White grub damage
Preventive imidacloprid or curative azadirachtin/Bt-galleriae if grubs were a problem the prior year.
Dollar spot in mid-summer
Maintain consistent N; water deep and infrequent; modern resistant cultivars resist it.
